Home/Senior downsizing

Make room for a smaller home.

Packing, sorting and cleanout help for Phoenix-area families planning a parent's move or a smaller living space.

What to know before you start

A downsizing cleanout handles belongings that will not go to the next home. Start by choosing the furniture, essentials and keepsakes to take. Double D Estates can discuss packing, donation and hauling for what remains, with the person's choices and the family's instructions agreed first.

Choose what moves before choosing what leaves

Use the next home's room sizes and storage space to decide which pieces will fit. Start with everyday essentials, familiar furniture and personal items the person wants nearby. Include them in decisions wherever possible.

A floor plan or measured furniture list can reduce last-minute changes. Mark the move items clearly so they do not become mixed with goods intended for donation or removal.

Separate packing from the remaining cleanout

Discuss which items need boxing, which are fragile and where packed belongings should wait. Confirm who handles the move itself. Packing services do not automatically include transportation, unpacking or arranging the new home.

Double D's existing services include packing and furniture removal. Explain whether you need help before moving day, after the person has moved, or in separate stages. Dates and the written scope should reflect that sequence.

Give family decisions their own deadline

If relatives want furniture or keepsakes, agree on collection plans before the removal day. Label uncertain items for review. Avoid a situation where the crew is ready to load while family members are still deciding what belongs to whom.

Leave a clear instruction for items that nobody can collect in time. Ask about donation options based on condition and acceptance, and keep any sale plans separate from the hauling estimate.

Include the spaces people forget

Garages, patios, storage units and closets often hold more than the main rooms. Include those spaces in photos and the walkthrough. Tell Diane about apartment access, parking, stairs and community work rules.

This service concerns belongings and the property. It is not personal care, medical care or a senior placement service. Use the cleanout checklist to prepare and the pricing guide to understand the work that affects an estimate.

Double D Estates is led by Diane Darnell and serves Phoenix and communities across the Valley.

Common questions

Can you help after my parent has already moved?

Yes. Discuss the remaining furniture, household items and storage areas with Diane. Clearly identify anything the family still wants before removal is scheduled.

Should we donate everything that will not fit?

Donation depends on condition and what a recipient will accept. Discuss the items and alternatives before scheduling. Do not assume every item can be donated or that donation pickup is part of the quote.

Does downsizing help include moving or personal care?

Double D can discuss packing and removal. Confirm any transportation separately. The cleanout service does not include personal or medical care, placement advice or an assumed full move-management package.
